Random Draft Order with a Race: Fantasy Leagues and Pickup Games

Every fantasy league has the same pre-draft question: who randomizes the order, and how does everyone know it was fair? A screenshot of a shuffled list works, but nobody saw it happen. A race helps. In Turtle Race each manager gets a turtle, the finishing order is the draft order, and you can send the league a link that replays the same race.

Why a race instead of a shuffled list

A list randomizer is instant and a little flat. For a league that has argued about keepers for a month, the draft order is a small event, and watching the turtles stop for snacks and flip over gives people something to talk about.

It also helps with trust. The order is picked at random the moment Start is pressed, the race only plays it back, and lane or team name doesn't change the odds. Everyone can replay the exact race from the link.

One caveat: a replay link shows what a race looked like, not that it was the first one the commissioner ran. If your league is the suspicious type, run it live on a video call, at the draft party, or right after announcing it in the chat.

Setting it up

The Fantasy Draft Order Race page opens with twelve lanes and "No. 1 pick" as the title. For a different league size, remove lanes or add them, up to 15.

  • Type each manager's or team's name in a lane. Short names fit best.
  • Tap the title if you want it to say something else, like "2026 draft".
  • Press Start and wait for the last turtle.
  • Read the ranking: first place picks first.

Screenshot the result right away. Play again starts a brand new race with a different order, which is the last thing you want after the order has been announced.

A 12-team race. The ranking is the order for round one.

Snake, linear and third-round reversal

The race gives you the round-one order. What happens after that depends on your format, so agree on it first.

  • Snake: round two runs the ranking backwards, round three forwards again. Last pick in round one gets first pick in round two.
  • Linear: every round uses the round-one order.
  • Third-round reversal: a snake, except round three repeats round two's order. It softens the edge of the first pick.

On a fantasy platform, set the draft order to manual and type in the ranking. The platform works out the later rounds.

Letting the league watch

Press Share on the result screen. Share replay sends a link that plays the same race from the start, and the message doesn't say who won, so people can watch it fresh. Share result sends just the final order for managers who only want their slot.

In a group chat the replay usually gets more reactions than the result, mostly from whoever led for half the race and finished seventh.

Pickup games

Pickup basketball or five-a-side has the same problem on a smaller scale: someone has to pick first, and it shouldn't always be the loudest person. Race the captains' names. With two captains the winner picks first; with three or four, snake the order like a fantasy draft.

If nobody wants to captain, skip the picking. Paste the names into Team Split, choose the number of teams, and it splits everyone at random with team sizes at most one apart. Nobody gets picked last.

When a race is the wrong tool

A race gives every team the same chance. Some leagues want a weighted draw instead, where last season's worst team has the best shot at the first pick. Turtles can't do that.

For that, Capsule Draw on Totle lets you give each team a different number of capsules, say five for the last-place team and one for the champion. More capsules means a better chance of being the one that drops out. It suits drawing the No. 1 pick. For a whole weighted order, agree on the method first, because a team's other capsules stay in the machine after its first one comes out.

Before you press Start

  • Which format: snake, linear or third-round reversal?
  • The first race counts. No reruns because someone landed the last pick.
  • Live, or replay link posted afterward?
  • On a tie (two turtles finishing together), rerun just those two.

FAQ

Does it work for fantasy basketball, baseball or hockey? Yes. It only needs names, so any sport and any league up to 15 teams.

Is this a horse race draft order generator? Same idea, with turtles instead of horses.
